Bridgeport Transportation Center

Bridgeport Transportation Center

|   Bridgeport CT
Overview: Bridgeport Intermodal Transportation Center was a unique opportunity to facilitate the interface of six different transportation modes in a single unified complex. In addition to the transportation enhancements, the city’s goals were to leverage the public investment in the transportation facilities to spur and attract investment in the public/private partnership that revitalized the adjacent block. The complex included two new parking facilities totaling 1500 spaces, new bus transfer facilities for intercity and intracity service, and new train station services Amtrak intercity service and the Metro North commuter rail service. A water taxi berth allowed water-borne links to the existing Long Island ferry terminal and a proposed high-speed ferry terminal. Pedestrian links between the facilities allow weather protected access to new Transit Oriented Development opposite the train station.
Bridgeport ITC Phase 2 was one part of a reconstruction of the downtown transportation hub of Bridgeport, CT. The project began with construction of a 950 car commuter garage and will continue with future infrastructure updates. This phase of the revitalization project replaced an existing surface parking lot on Water Street. Phase 2 went to bid in November 2005, and added a new bus interchange and 10,000 sf concourse. Two new 650 foot pedestrian bridges link both the bus facilities and the existing garage to a nearby rail station. A main, double height waiting area of 2500 sf faces the street and the berthing area, and creates an open, glowing glass public atrium on Water Street. The zinc facades are fully illuminated by a ring of exterior in-ground lights. The palette of materials for the concourse includes zinc sheet metal tiles in a rainscreen assembly, butt glazed curtainwall, and terrazzo floors. Lighting in the main waiting area has been designed to illuminate large-scale WPA murals, to be hung around the upper story walls.
