Emerson College Rotch Field
| Boston MA
This new sports field for Emerson College is a joint use redevelopment of 2.79-acre Rotch Playground with the City of Boston. Located at the corner of Randolph and Albany Streets in the South End, the project includes a new artificial turf playing field for soccer, lacrosse, softball, and youth baseball. Supporting the field is a new 5,000 square foot masonry building located along Randolph Street that houses public restrooms, collegiate-use locker rooms, field manager office, and storage rooms.
The building plan is long and thin to fit the narrow margin between the street and playing field. The design concept employs a heavy timber roof framing system that floats independently above the masonry enclosing walls of the building, separated by continuous glass block clerestory system. A major covered exterior entry through the building provides public access to the field.
The site layout provides accommodations for a bus drop-off zone along Albany Street and four reserved passenger vehicle spaces off of Randolph Street. Reinforcing the landscape theme of the site, the building has a series of narrow planters and wall trellises along Randolph Street that will allow wall climbing vines to create a layer of vegetation in front of the masonry facade.
